Nothing Like Waiting 'Til the Last Minute

I had a sub and a beer for lunch. And then I fell asleep in the shade of a butterfly bush. I was so not meant to work.

The Funasaurus flies in tonight, there is a bit of strawberry pie left, and there’s a slight breeze. Life couldn’t be better. Did I mention the rustling of the trees that sounds like a river coming from a long way off? Ah, summertime.

I have also been juggling mini crises at work in between bouts of eating and napping, so I feel vaguely like my life is not totally devoid of meaning to other people.

Tomorrow we head to D.C., I’m really hoping it doesn’t rain and cancel out the fireworks. I’m staying with my cousin and his family, which includes two little girls, ages two and four. I meant to bring them a little gift, but I am out of ideas. I did books last time. Any suggestions? I’m totally clueless as to what two and four-year-old girls want.

bring them miniature flags to wave at the fireworks

or a coloring book and some crayons to play with while waiting for adults to do adult stuff

or a little stuffed animal

or toy cell phones so they can pretend to call you up and thank you...

Little girls, regardless of upbringing and location, like sparkly, pretty things. Make a run to the dollar store or Target and get tiaras or fun toys with jewels. Its a winner every time...

Little purses.

Little boxes.

Anything with a kitten on it.

Yes on sparkly. You cannot go wrong with sparkly. Also, miniature things of any description, like those crazy Japanese erasers in the shape of other things (http://www.hapaculture.com/life/kids/raishapa/erasers.html). If it's miniature AND sparkly, extra points.

Just hit the toy section at Target and you will find all sorts of ideas. And yes, anything pretty and sparkly will be a winner. Isn't that what we all want afterall, even now that we are "grown-up"?

Say hi to the Hubby and the Cuz!

Lots of great ideas there!
What we give girls at daycare is usually some little trinket with the effigy of the cartoon of the moment. Like Dora, Tinkerbell, etc.
Mini-dress-up dolls, coloring books or giant coloring sheets, those cool crayons that you can twist out (those are always a big hit.)
For the older ones, we give small plants that they can take care of,or a small collection of pretty stones bought at the esoteric boutique, a piece of jewelry made for kids...
Hope it helps.

Or . . . candy!

see, I'd love to offer ideas, but my resident 2 yr old prefers to play with dish towels at the moment and ignores all of the 'real' toys.

I don't know what you ended up getting, but for future reference, you can never, ever go wrong with bubbles. :-) can't wait to hear all about the trip! Did you finish Jane Eyre?
